Julie can also be seen, unusually for her, wearing a dress, at her wedding.
I can claim to have been told to stop drinking by a doctor. Late in the afternoon of my first Beaujolais Run I rather inarticulately offered to buy Julie a pint. I’ve had quite enough she replied, and so have you. She was right of course.
Scholey (as she’s generally and affectionately known) takes running a little less seriously since the birth of daughter Holly, a decision which has left the women’s coach far from gruntled. Grumbled Derek, It’s all very well for dilettantes like McColgan and Masterkova to go around dropping sprogs like teenagers in St Mellons, but my athletes should get their priorities right.
She still turns cartwheels after most events.

A classic triathlete who lives near Rhoose and practices speedwork on the local runway.
Although a builder and double-glazing man by trade, he has never been known to show his rear cleavage unknowlingly.
Local police have seen his motorbike, but only through speed camera lenses.

Better known by his nickname “Flash”. This was given him by Woody many years ago due to his outstanding ability to take photographs. Problem was, the object didn’t often end up in the frame!Flash is the self-styled Race Director of the Castles Relay. Everyone in the Alexander Pub in Caernarfon knows that. He also has a detailed knowledge of all B&B establishments in Caernarfon town, and isn’t afraid to tell anyone within earshot. Having said that, the race just wouldn’t be the same without Flash & Ellen.Every club has a “Flash” or someone similar. But no other club has the original.

Now you see him, now you don’t. Paul has been around an awfully long time. And injured for only a little less. He’s still one of the talents of the club. (Jeff will have the league tables, I can’t remember where he falls exactly, but top five for the marathon, and he was reputedly a decent footballer before that.
He teaches chemistry in Brecon, and Mick would know more details than I do.

Memory can play strange tricks, especially as we get older. Not Kelvin’s. When Mick found a 10 Mile race result from 1987, where Kelvin apparently only ran 59:23, Kelvin’s mind reached back fourteen years and he confidently pronounced that that couldn’t have been himhe’d given his number to someone else. Not that he could recall who.
Pictures of Kelvin appeared in the February 2002 Ace.

Cath had a baby boy, Joe, just before Christmas [03], and has been very dedicated and sensible in her return to athletics. She is now back in full training and hopes to race at her best distance of 5 km very shortly [July 04], as a build up for the Gwents this winter.

They say life begins at 40. Well Gareth’s running has certainly enjoyed a new lease of life since joining the club a few months shy of that landmark birthday.
I first met Gareth at around 8 miles during the 2004 London Marathon. He was running for the Alzheimers Disease Society and he recognised my club vest. After chatting for a couple of minutes, during which time I urged him to join us on Thursdays nights, I eased away. He caught me again around 23 miles, by which time I felt less inclined to chat, and he ended up with an excellent new PB of 2:39:34.
Four months later, he joined us. The effect of running with a regular group proved a welcome stimulus, with the result that this year’s London saw a further reduction to 2:36:32.
Since that time, Gareth has competed for us with increasing frequency. He’s also incredibly knowledgable on all sports, and supports Jan Ullrich (but then again, nobody’s perfect!)
An engineer with British Airways by profession, Gareth could be a high flier with us for many years to come.

I can blame Paul for introducing me to the delights of the Dursley Dozen. His ability to push such things as fun without embarrassment will ensure there’s always a job at Splott Market should teaching ever pall.
Paul’s absence from results recently is due to a brush with an overactive thyroid. (Diagnosed by John Plain before the medical profession. One of the complaints John has never experienced. I forget the other one.)
Paul is back to training regularly, and has embraced triathlon, sometimes attempting all three events in a single day.

Yes, I’ll just just be doing a steady run tonight are the famous last words spoken by Matt every Thursday before the red mist descends and he shoots off never to be seen again. It wasn’t always this way though.
Matt only took up the sport 3 years ago but through hard work and excellent running partners his times have gone from the mediocre to the miraculous.
Matt puts the secret of his recent success down to clean living, meditation and prayer or perhaps it’s due to the benefit of living at altitude; a 4th floor flat in Westgate Street.
Dave Coles adds;
Matt is famous for his ability to coach a gaggle of women early in the morning - perhaps this is why he often under-performs in races. However he has started reaching his potential during 2003, having knocked forty seconds off his best 5k time this year (17m 46s), and is set to break 3 hours for a marathon if only he could translate his superb training form and mileage in to performing in big races. Away from the track, Matt makes superb bread.

It wasn’t so long ago that Edwina was winning everything going, not just her age category, not just the vets, but the senior women as well.
She may not have shown that sort of form over the past couple of years, but she remains a formidable trainer and competitor. And after winning ten bottles of wine in the Poole 10k (five for fifth woman; five for first in her age category) she has ample evidence for her return to form.
(Note: many members have assumed that Edwina also entered a new age category in 2001. This is incorrect: she is currently 48 and proud of it.)
